Breathe, Annie, Breathe

(Hundred Oaks #5)
by Miranda Kenneally
Published by: Sourcebooks Fire
Release Date: 15th July 2014
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romance

Annie hates running. No matter how far she jogs, she can’t escape the guilt that if she hadn’t broken up with Kyle, he might still be alive. So to honor his memory, she starts preparing for the marathon he intended to race.

But the training is even more grueling than Annie could have imagined. Despite her coaching, she’s at war with her body, her mind—and her heart. With every mile that athletic Jeremiah cheers her on, she grows more conflicted. She wants to run into his arms…and sprint in the opposite direction. For Annie, opening up to love again may be even more of a challenge than crossing the finish line.

"Breathe, Annie, Breathe is an emotional, heartfelt, and beautiful story about finding yourself after loss and learning to love. It gave me so many feels. Her best book yet." — Jennifer Armentrout, New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You

My Review

Breathe, Annie, Breathe was absolutely fantastic. It was my first actual read from Miranda Kenneally, but I do have the others in the series on my TBR pile. They will definitely be moving on up my list, I just love the characters, writing style and the fun. This one had it all!

Annie Winters is a complicated girl, at the age of eighteen she has been carrying around guilt for the past six months. Annie has made up her mind to start training for the Music City Marathon. Never before has she enjoyed running, but now she is running for somebody else.

Jeremiah Brown is twenty years old and has the biggest competitive streak around. Every little thing becomes a competition that he has to win. The only problem is, he is getting hurt is some cases and is causing terrible stress to his family.

Annie started a program with Matt Brown that will prepare her for the marathon. There is a lot of training, but also diet, muscle and stamina building. It’s not an easy program, but Annie is determined to see it through to the end.

On day two of her training program, Annie gets passed by a boy running backwards. He is a smart alek and tells Annie to pick up her pace. She eventually gets to officially meet Jeremiah, he works with Matt, his brother as a pace runner, helping others to match a time.

Kyle and Annie met on her first day of Grade 9. At first she didn’t really like him, until she kept hitting him in the head with a volley ball. Then they started going out and were together until that fateful night. Kyle was training for twelve months for this marathon and since he won’t be able to finish it, Annie will finish it for him.

Annie is having difficulty adjusting to her rigorous routine as the countdown continues, her body has a mind of its own and Annie doesn’t know if she will make it to the finish line. 26.2 miles is a long distance and running alone is becoming a little monotonous. Slowly she starts to make friends that become running partners. Now everything seems to be falling into place, but will she make it?

What is the story behind the guilt Annie holds for Kyle? What is up with Jeremiah and his extreme sports? Why did his Mother kick him out of home? Will Annie ever get passed her feelings for Kyle? The big question, will she make it to the marathon and finish the race?

Annie is a fabulous character, her emotional rollercoaster of feelings for Jeremiah and Kyle; her relationship with her Mother and her determination to complete the race for Kyle is so admirable. I was laughing out loud and crying along with Annie. Ms Kenneally is remarkable and I highly recommend this to all new adult readers.
