Summary: Katie Rose’s Boys of Summer series returns for a delicious double-header—with the story of total opposites who are drawn to each other like moths to a flame.
Nikki Case is no fan of baseball. Her ex gambled away a fortune on the sport, and now her PR firm has tasked her with cleaning up the league’s most notorious bad boys. The New Jersey Sonics are known for wild womanizing and booze-fueled brawls, so Nikki expects the worst. Her first stop in the battle to win hearts and minds is star hitter Jake Baldwin—a legendary ladies man so smokin’ he threatens to melt her tough-girl armor.
Although his teammates prank her without mercy, Jake admires the way Nikki gives as good as she gets. She may be the queen of frost, but there’s kindling beneath those sultry curves—and he’s just the man to ignite it. But when a PR nightmare lands the Sonics in headlines across the country, Nikki is ready to walk. Only then does Jake realize how important she is to the Sonics’ success—and that winning the love of a good woman is no game.

Title: Too Hot to Handle
Series: The Boys of Summer #2
Author: Katie Rose
Released: 27th January 2015
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Source: via publisher on NetGalley - thank you.
Too Hot to Handle was my first experience reading a Katie Rose novel and certainly not my last. I haven’t read a whole lot of books centred on sport, but this was a lot of fun and a great read. I picked up another in the series because I enjoyed it so much. This series is set on a different couple from within the team in each book, so you don’t necessarily have to read them in order. Another great aspect for this series.
Nikki Case is a divorced twenty-eight year old PR specialist and has been recruited by the Sonic’s to pull the team into shape and change their bad image in the public eye. They are known for roughhousing and bar brawls and Nikki has her work cut out for her.
Jake Baldwin is the player that gets the game going with enthusiasm and spark. He’s known as the ladies’ man and can get whichever lady he sets his mind after. Jake and Ryan come up with a bet, Jake has to make Nikki fall in love with him for real and if he loses, Brian will get his #11 jersey. Jake thinks he’s a sure thing to win the bet, but he hasn’t met Nikki’s stubborn streak yet.
Nikki has a history with ball players and does not want to get involved with another one. Nikki tells Jake to keep his pants zipped up and what’s private to keep private. She also tells him she’s not interested in him in the slightest and if he thinks he’s too hot to handle, then that’s his problem. Nikki isn’t a rookie, she’s done this circus before and is determined to get the team looking professional and fresh.
The problem is the team isn’t coming to the party and the next day they all turn up in dirty uniforms, unshaven and grotty appearances.
“They looks like a bunch of barnyard roosters scratching in the dirt.” (loc. 385)
Nikki had a couple of tricks up her sleeve though and the boys didn’t take much coaxing to get manscaped. But still appearances weren’t everything, it was also about their field antics.
The team is also known as pranksters, not only to each other but to the team behind the scenes. Nikki becomes their target and they start to cause trouble. Will she put up with their pranks or leave?
Will Jake succeed in making the ice queen, Nikki fall in love with him? Will she find out about the bet? Can Nikki change the team’s image enough? Jake isn’t all arrogance and exhibitionism, will Nikki see the man behind the jersey?
Read to see what antics the Sonic’s get up to and if Nikki will stick around long enough to continue her 100% success rate. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read and if you’re after some fun and surprises, this is a definite for you.
