Summary: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

I have no idea why I didn’t read this book sooner. If I could mark this book a ten instead of a five I would. Absolutely amazing premise and the characters were all incredible. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but can’t wait for that either. There are so many elements happening in this book, my notes went to seven pages instead of the standard three. So much happening and the ending, oh dear! I haven’t picked up Insurgent yet due to scheduling, but I am desperate to see what happened.
Beatrice Prior is sixteen and undertaking “the test”. The test determines which faction she is best suited to. Beatrice has a brother that is also taking the test at the same time and knows Caleb definitely belongs to Abnegation, but Beatrice doesn’t know where she belongs.
There are five factions: Abnegation, Condor, Erudite, Amity and Dauntless. Each faction has a certain quality with Abnegation being selfless; Condor is honest; Dauntless is brave; Amity is peaceful and Erudite the intelligent.
Beatrice has to make her decision and doesn’t have a lot of time. At the ceremony, everybody is shocked by some of the choices and none more than her. Will she stay with her family and pretend to be someone she’s not OR will she be herself and choose a faction that will make her happy?
After the ceremony, all the new faction members have to complete the initiation first then a three stage process to determine who is worthy of becoming a full-fledged member. Those that do not succeed will be factionless.
Jumping on and off trains has always been an exhilarating thing to watch, but now Beatrice has to put it into practice. The biggest jump though is into the unknown and as Beatrice takes the initiative, she jumps first……..
Beatrice begins stage one and is concerned she won’t make it. Being the only one from Abnegation, they all underestimate her, but she is determined to make it through. Beatrice makes friends within the initiates and has feelings for her training coordinator, Four.
There will be 9 cut from the group and the competition is tough. Beatrice may have made some friends, but she also has enemies. She has to watch her back when some of them get dangerous.
Will Beatrice make it through stage 1, 2 or even 3? Can she keep her secret hidden in order to avoid being killed? What is going on with Ford, is he interested in Beatrice or not? What about the in-fighting between the initiates, will Beatrice be attacked/killed? Does she miss her parents and brother?
What an extraordinarily amazing book! I am gobsmacked by how surprising and different this book is. Ms Roth, wow, just wow! Everybody needs to read this series, there is something for everybody; from action to intrigue, a little romance to betrayal; politics to drama – just everything. Pick it up NOW!
