5* Book Review of Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker

Summary: Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

I had heard so many wonderful things about this series and had Ten Tiny Breaths on my TBR pile for, so when I received Five Ways to Fall, I just had to start this series. Now I’m addicted to Kacey Cleary and her unfortunate story along with all the other characters within this series. My favourite character throughout so far is Storm, she’s always underestimated and brings the whole group together with her beautiful daughter, Mia.

Kacey Cleary is a twenty year old that has experienced something so horrific that nobody should have had to endure. Her whole life shattered four years ago when a drunk driver hit her Father’s car and every occupant died except for Kacey. After a twelve month stay in hospital learning to walk again, Kacey joined the real world, but didn’t know how to process everything that happened.  Turning to drugs, alcohol and sex, Kacey went on a destructive war path to shut out the pain and anger.

Her younger sister, Livie, now fifteen, was lucky enough not to have been in the car at the time of the accident and at least the sisters have each other. Their guardians were an Uncle and Aunt, but when Livie’s safety was compromised, Kacey ran away with Livie to start a life on their own.

Now in Miami to the sun and the beach, the girls have found an apartment, a new school for Livie and all Kacey needs now is a job. Kickboxing has been an outlet for Kacey’s anger for the past couple of years and now she’s found another gym to continue training.

Moving in, their next door neighbour welcomes them. Nora Matthews, (or Storm as she’s known by) has a five year old daughter Mia. Livie being the innocent, caring and sweet girl that she is has an instant connection with the single mother and daughter and they become quick friends. Kacey is a little more sceptical, but when Storm offers her a job where she works in a bar, they all quickly develop a close relationship.

The girls other neighbour is a hot twenty five year old guy that is trying to get under Kacey’s skin. Trent Emerson always seems to appear wherever Kacey is and it’s creeping her out a little, but Kacey can take care of herself.

Kacey isn’t a sharing person and Livie won’t tell her story to others either, so the girls are a mystery to everyone. Kacey decides she needs a friend to confide in and Storm is genuinely caring and friendly. Sharing some things with her helps their bond, but will Kacey ever be ready to share everything?

Storm pushes a little to get Kacey to talk to Trent and the more time they spend together the more he sneaks under her titanium walls. It also appears that Trent has his own deep dark secrets and doesn’t want to share them with Kacey either. So when push comes to shove, Trent disappears for days and Kacey is heartbroken.

There’s an incident at work where Kacey goes Rambo and that’s when she realises she may need some professional help after all. Will Kacey be able to move on from her past? What is the secret that Trent is hiding? Will Kacey be able to put Livie through college?

Ten Tiny Breaths is such an emotional roller-coaster, I was laughing out loud, crying along with the girls and loved Kacey’s no BS attitude. Ms Kathleen Tucker, you are one amazing lady to have created something so heart-wrenching and mind-blowing. This is a definite must read for ALL readers.
