5* Book Review of Play by Kylie Scott

Play (A Stage Dive Novel) - Kylie Scott
Summary: Kylie Scott returns with the highly anticipated follow-up to international bestseller Lick.Mal Ericson, drummer for the world famous rock band Stage Dive, needs to clean up his image fast—at least for a little while. Having a good girl on his arm should do the job just fine. Mal doesn’t plan on this temporary fix becoming permanent, but he didn’t count on finding the one right girl.

Anne Rollins never thought she’d ever meet the rock god who plastered her teenage bedroom walls—especially not under these circumstances. Anne has money problems. Big ones. But being paid to play the pretend girlfriend to a wild life-of-the-party drummer couldn’t end well. No matter how hot he is. Or could it?

Lick was such a fabulous read that I couldn’t wait to pick up Play and now with Lead out, that is next on my list. Kylie Scott is such a talented writer, with humorous characters and fantastic world building that I felt I was right there. Malcolm would have to be my favourite, although I am very intrigued to read Ben’s story; he really came out of his shell in Play. Malcom is the fun guy in the group and there is certainly never a dull moment. One thing’s for sure though and that’s when Malcolm has his mind set on something, nothing can change it.

Anne Rollins is a twenty three year old that works in a bookstore and has always had a crush on her boss, but he’s a womaniser that isn’t looking in her direction. Arriving at her apartment after work, Anne finds it half empty and no roommate. It looks like her now ex-roommate, Skye has bailed taking furniture. Skye owes rent and left before paying up. Anne is such a loving and caring person that always tries to help others, but this time her rent is due eight days and only has $65 to her name. What will she do?

Lauren and Nate live next door to Anne and of course she’s heard of Stage Dive with her ex-neighbour Ev marrying David. Lauren comes over and drags Anne to a party with Stage Dive; Anne has had a crush on Malcolm Ericson since high school and Anne is curious to see the drummer. Her boss, crush and best friend, Reece calls while she’s at the party and Anne steps onto the balcony to talk.

Finishing the call, Anne realises she isn’t alone on the balcony, there in the shadows is the tall drummer that heard her conversation. Anne was struck speechless that the drummer of Stage Dive is talking to her. With his hilarious round-about way, Mal tells Anne she is a doormat and Anne blows up at him. The whole party is watching the spectacle from inside.

Anne walks back in and hears Mal telling Ben, the bass player that Anne is his girl and they are moving in together. **funny bugger** This is the beginning of their intense, fun and confusing relationship.

Will Anne be able to tell the difference between the real Mal and the Mal known to the public? Can Anne hold out from falling for the complicated drummer? Will Anne find out what is going on with Mal behind his comical exterior?

With heartache, drunken escapades and paparazzi drama, Play is addictive, so much fun and you can’t help but fall for the problematic drummer. Anne is a sweet character that has to learn to stick up for herself and not be walked on. This series is a must read to all new adult readers. Bring on Jimmy’s story, Lead.
